ZMD Country Projects

zmd-map
Zero Mothers Die (ZMD) is a multi-stakeholder global initiative to reduce maternal and newborn mortality through the systematic use of mobile technologies and ICTs. Zero Mothers Die presents a global project model and works with country stakeholders to adapt the model to produce a tailored ZMD country project that applies specific mobile and ICT solutions to improving maternal and newborn health.

ZMD GABON

Representatives of the Fondation Sylvia Bongo Ondimba (FSBO) requested the formulation and deployment of a Zero Mothers Die country project in Gabon. To kick-start the planning process, members representing the Zero Mothers Die Consortium attended a project formulation mission, in cooperation with FSBO, to evaluate the context in Gabon, identify relevant stakeholders for the initiative and support FSBO, who will be the lead partner, in formulating and deploying the ZMD Gabon project and local partnership.

ZMD NIGERIA

Zero Mothers Die Nigeria is supporting an important initiative by the Traffina Foundation, called Save Our Mothers, which is also a Millennia2025 Foundation WeObservatory Selected Project. Save Our Mothers addresses the key challenges to maternal and reproductive health through the deployment of mobile health (mHealth) interventions targeting pregnant women who are victims of dangerous practices. The mHealth initiative sends out weekly bulk SMS with important pregnancy information and information on the dangers of harmful practices in order to save women's lives during childbirth.

This innovative mHealth initiative has supported rural women in Abia state (Omoba and Obichukwu communities), Imo state (Egbu and Amala communities), and FCT Abuja (Pambara and Ushafa communities), and has motivated them to access quality maternal health services both at the health centers and at home through mobile messaging services.

This mobile messaging service delivering maternal, newborn and child health information to pregnant women and new mothers is made available in five Nigerian dialects, thereby localizing the service to the areas of implementation.
